Raid Data Recovery

It is impossible to prevent the mechanical failure of a hard drive, it is possible to reduce the impact of such an event. Using a redundant array of independant disks (RAID) setup; two or more hard drives work in unison to form a system's main storage. More advanced RAID setups can survive the failure of a hard drive and repair or reconstruct lost data on the fly.

Data rescue

Today nearly everyone depends on a computer to get things done and store the information needed to get those things done. Businesses large and small store data of all types on their desktop computers and servers. Unfortunately computers currently depend on components with moving parts, moving parts than can and do fail, often at the most inopportune times. The other, even more unfortunate truth, is that most people and businesses do not back up their files or have a plan for data recovery should a disaster occur.

The good news is that is it not difficult to set up and maintain a data recovery plan. The best plan for recovering lost data is a multi-layered approach that includes at least one form of external media data storage. Since even a drive meant for back up purposes can fail, backing up files to a compact disk or thumb drive is a smart idea.

The most common approach for data recovery is to store copies of files on an external hard drive so in the event the main hard drive fails the files can simply be copied over once the hard drive has been replaced and the operating system reinstalled. Some businesses opt for a more fail safe solution and store their critical files on an offsite server that is maintained by a service provider. The advantage of this approach is that a service like this will make regular back ups of the stored data which reduces the chance of losing data to a hardware failure.

Often times the problem is that a hard drive is still mechanically functional but the operating system will not boot which means the only choice to restore a functional computer is to reinstall the operating system which will destroy the data on the hard disk. In this case the alternative is to use a Linux live CD to access the files on the hard drive and either save them to an external media or upload them to a server. Almost every Linux distribution can be downloaded as a live CD which is a fully functional operating system that runs completely from the disk media.

Data loss will happen to everyone at some point, that is why it is important to have a plan in place to recover lost data and files before it happens. Having a data recovery plan in place is just good business and can mean the difference between a quick recovery or days of frustration and massive revenue loss.
